In essence, keep pewter both warm and dry and do not allow it to become simultaneously cold and damp.
Pewter should never be used in an oven, microwave, or on the stovetop and should not be exposed to a direct flame. This could cause melting and deform the piece.
For all pewter, fingerprints and dust may be removed with a glass cleaner applied with a facial tissue.
POLISH
A polished finish may be refreshed occasionally with polish. Danforth recommends and sells Simichrome polish. It is a soft paste for virtually any metal. It cleans to a brilliant shine and leaves a protective film. When applying to satin-finished pieces, you will want to apply the polish following the grain otherwise the finish can come off over time.
Cape Cod Polishing Cloths are also highly recommended for a good shine.
CLEAN
Wash your pewter in hot soapy water, rinse in hot water, and towel dry immediately.
We do not recommend machine washing.
You can also use products explicitly labeled for pewter, such as Hagerty, Goddard's or Bon Ami.
- Make a Paste: Wet your sponge or cloth and the pewter surface, then sprinkle Bon Ami powder to create a paste.
- Rub Gently: Rub the area with the paste, focusing on scuff marks.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse with clean water to remove all powder, and dry immediately with a soft cloth.
Bon Ami is good for superficial stainless steel marks on pewter, but for significant darkening or tarnish, a dedicated metal polish (like Simichrome or Goddard's) might be needed after initial soap-and-water cleaning.
Pewter is delicate; while Bon Ami is gentle, avoid prolonged contact or abrasive scrubbing that could damage the finish, and never use it in a dishwasher.
Always test any cleaning method on a hidden spot to ensure it doesn't harm the pewter's unique patina, which adds character.
Caution: Be sure glass in oil lamp is completely cooled before cleaning the lamp chimney or the glass may shatter. Clean glass with hot soapy water and a rolled-up towel for the inside. Dry right away to avoid water spots.
We offer polish, lamp oil, replacement wicks and chimneys.
